Recently some friends of mine have been lucky enough to win designer wellieswhich intrigued me a bit. Wellington boots have never struck me as one of the most fashionable items in the world of shoes. I have been thinking about getting some wellies for a while, with the miserable weather we have been having the park where I walk the dog has turned to mud. I don’t want wear my best boots and have them ruined. Wellies are easy to wash, just rinse the mud off and that’s it. Perfect for muddy walks in the park and also essential wear for festivals.
In days gone by you could get wellies in black and, if you were lucky, red. Red wellies were desirable as they were worn by Paddington Bear, one of the great fashion icons of primary school. We always used to wear wellies to school on rainy or snowy days and then change into our normal shoes when we got there. The cloakroom often featured a nice line of wellies standing in a row, waiting until play time. Now it seems wellies are everywhere. We are pulling them on for walks in the rain, snow and festivals and they have got funky as well.
When I think of wellies I think of the classic wellington boot, like these Hunters.
They are the traditional shiny black with a little buckle as embellishment. The soles are thick and sturdy as well, ideal if you are walking in the rain as you do not want to slip. This is the short cut version which is ideal for walking the streets in the rain. If you are planning a trip to a festival then you probably want to grab the original tall version which comes in a variety of colours.
If you want something a bit less traditional and more Arctic looking what about these Coolway Cloudy boots?
What I really love though is the new brightly coloured and highly patterned Wellington boots that add a bit of zing. There are so many different styles that you can wear now allowing you to create your own style. The ones that really grabbed my eye was this bright pair, ironically named Always Summer and made by Havaianas.
I know that pulling on a pair of these will make me smile, no matter what the weather is like outside. They just add a little bit of sunshine into a gloomy day. I think if I was to choose a pair of Wellington boots these would be the ones I would choose.
