Unboxing the Professional Secrets Kitchen Thermometer
The Professional Secrets kitchen thermometer I was sent came in a stylish wooden case. This thermometer was from the first batch of 200. The smart black box is the normal packaging.
It also came with a food calendar with lots of hints and tips for seasonal cooking. I am a big fan of using food that is in season as it tastes much better so this will be very helpful.
Inside the black box is the thermometer, a protective sheath and two AAA batteries. There is also an instruction book with tips on how to get the most out of your thermometer.
The batteries are easy to install and they will be easy to replace as they are a standard size.

Using the Professional Secrets Kitchen Thermometer
I put the Professional Secrets kitchen thermometer to test in a variety of different situations.
The first thing to note is that the food thermometer comes with a sheath so you can store your thermometer when it is not in use. This helps to protect the thermometer probe which thin and could easily get bent. The sheath has a handy slot on the side so you can clip it to your belt.
The thermometer is a nice size and fits neatly into your hand.
First I tried it out when boiling a ham. The probe is slips easily into the meat and gives a fast and accurate reading. I like the way the display flips so you don’t have to worry about having the thermometer the right way round.

Next I tried making raspberry jam. When making ham I like to use a thermometer to measure the setting point. Boiling jam gets very hot and can easily burn you. This kitchen thermometer was easy to hold so that you do not get burnt. The reading changes rapidly and you can easily see when the jam is at setting point.

What I thought of the Professional Secrets Kitchen Thermometer
I found the Professional Secrets kitchen thermometer very easy to use. It is obvious a lot of thought has gone into the design. Little features like the display flipping as you use it make such a difference.
The thermometer is a good size making it easy to keep your hand away from boiling liquids and still be able to measure the temperature. The probe is really thin. This allows you to measure the temperature of the food without leaving a hole. It also gives a really accurate reading.
This food thermometer has become invaluable in my kitchen.
Where can I buy the Professional Secrets Kitchen Thermometer?
You can find all the information about where to buy the Professional Secrets kitchen thermometer on the Professional Secrets website.
You can also obtain it from Amazon (RRP £80.90) from the following (affiliate) link
Why do I need a food thermometer?
To avoid food poisoning you need to ensure that cooked food reaches an internal temperature of at least 73 C. Food that is being kept warm needs to be kept above 63 C. The easiest way to check this is by using a food thermometer.
If you are making a game pie checking the internal temperature is a good way to check that the meat is cooked. A food thermometer is also very helpful when making jam and other preserves. You can easily check that the boiling jam is at the setting point of 105 C. This is much easier than putting a small bit on a saucer in a freezer and seeing if it wrinkles.
What’s the best way to check the temperature of cooked food?
To check the temperature of your food make sure the thermometer probe is clean. Insert the tip of the probe into the centre of the food or the thickest part.

Coincidentally, my previous sugar thermometer has failed twice, so I have bought a new one already – was thinking this would have been a good option but I must admit, it’s very pricey! The classic version I have was only about £7 yet it’s not digital of course. Wishlist!
Alison Maclean says
It is quite expensive but definitely worth it. The number of times I have burnt myself from jam making as other thermometers were too short is too long to count!
