I have been trying out the Maplin mini robotic vacuum cleaner to see how well it would clean my home. Would it make my life easier? Read on to find out how well it did on the different floor surfaces around my home.
Do you ever feel like cleaning the house is a thankless task? You clean one room and seconds later the family dirty it again. The dog tramps though with muddy paws or the teenage son drops rubbish on the floor. Dust builds up quickly and pet hair gets everywhere. Keeping on top of the housework often feels impossible.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could automate some of those cleaning tasks? What could be nicer than having an army of cleaners working away in the background doing the work so you don’t have to? This is the idea behind the mini robotic vacuum cleaner from Maplin. Turn it on and it will make its way around the room cleaning up.

Unpacking the mini robotic vacuum cleaner
The mini robotic vacuum cleaner comes in the standard cardboard box with polystyrene protection. The packaging is not excessive, the cleaner nestles in the foam protection and a small bag contains the extra parts.
Inside the box, you get the vacuum cleaner with a battery pack and charger. There are four brushes so you have two spare. You will also find an extra filter as well as the instruction book and a couple of dusters.
Before you start to use the robotic vacuum cleaner you need to attach the brushes and add the battery pack. Finally, you need to charge it which can take up to four hours.

Assembling the mini robotic vacuum cleaner
Adding the battery pack
The mini robotic vacuum cleaner comes with a green battery pack you need to insert before use. This is done on the underside of the vacuum cleaner. Here you will find a dust plate which you need to remove to get to the battery holder. This clips off easily. You can then open the battery compartment and add the batteries. Once these are in, put the lid back on the compartment and snap the dust plate back on. It is really simple.
Adding the brushes
The front of the robotic vacuum cleaner has two brushes which need to be put on before you use it. These snap easily into place over the two prongs at the front. Once the cleaner on these rotate and brush the dust under the cleaner to pick up.
You can easily pull the brushes off in order to replace them. Two spare brushes come with the cleaning robot which is handy.
Charging the mini robotic vacuum cleaner
Once the batteries have been inserted the mini robotic vacuum cleaner is easy to charge. Just plug the charger into the mains and into the jack on the top of the robot cleaner. While it is charging the top of the cleaner flashes blue lights. Once it is charged the lights stop flashing the stay blue.
The first charge took about four to five hours. Subsequent recharging has been quicker. Once charged it will run for a couple of hours before it needs recharging.
Emptying the dust and changing the filter
The dust container is inside the body of the robotic vacuum cleaner. To open the cleaner you push on the front and the lid springs open. Inside there is a plastic cover. Remove this and you will find the filter and the dust container. The filter lifts up easily with a catch and the dust container can be removed and emptied.
Whilst the dust container does not look large it does hold a surprising amount.
Adding a duster
As well as vacuuming the floor you can also add a dust cloth to the bottom of the robot cleaner. When running on hard floors this will dust and polish the floor as it moves. Two dusting clothes come with the robotic vacuum cleaner.
To attach the clothes you need to clip off the black attachment on the underside of the hoover. Fold the duster around it. The duster is held in place by serrated holes on either side of the black attachment. This is then put back onto the robotic cleaner. It will then dust as well as hoover.
How does the robotic vacuum cleaner clean?
To start the robot vacuum cleaner cleaning you press the button on the top. It will then set off on its journey around the room. As it moves the led lights on the top will flash blue. If it bumps into an obstacle the lights will flash red and the cleaner will turn to avoid it.
As it moves the brushes turn sweeping the dust under the cleaner which sucks it in. It seems to pick up larger pieces of grit as well as dust. Inbuilt sensors also sense if it reaches an edge like a stair and it will avoid these.
The cleaner moves randomly around the room and eventually all the area get cleaned. The robot cleaner works brilliantly on tiles, laminate flooring and shorter pile carpets. On longer pile carpets it had difficulty moving around and often became stuck. I also found it got trapped under my coffee table as this is the exact height of the cleaner.
Inbuilt sensors ensure that the vacuum doesn’t fall off table edges or crash into walls and LED lights illuminate during cleaning. The vacuum runs at less than 65dB(A) so that you can continue your day to day tasks with minimal interruption.
How effective is the robotic vacuum cleaner?
I found that the mini robotic vacuum cleaner was very effective on my tiled and laminate floors. It also worked well on my bedroom carpets which are short pile. On the long pile living room carpet it frequently got stuck.
The robot cleaner dealt with a wide range of dirt. As I own a dog pet hair can be a big problem. The robot cleaner picks this up effectively. It also dealt with large pieces of grit and mud. When I left it in the kitchen for a couple of hours it ran around happily cleaning the floor. The floor was much cleaner afterwards.
The best thing about the robot vacuum cleaner is that it is a great time saver. I can leave it running in a room cleaning and it is one less thing for me to do. The dog is still a little suspicious of it though.
Would I recommend the mini robotic vacuum cleaner?
The mini robotic vacuum cleaner is £69.99 which is a very reasonable price. If you are a busy mum and have a house with lots of hardwood, laminate or tiled floors this is a great buy. You can leave the robot cleaner running round the room and know the floor will be clean.
If you have longer piled carpets the robotic vacuum cleaner will struggle to move. You will have to keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t get stuck so it is quicker to do it yourself.
Overall I am very happy with it and have found the robot cleaner to be a big time saver.
