How To Love by Katie Cotugno

October 17, 2013

How to LoveHow to love by Katie Cotungno is a love story, but not an ordinary one. It is both a heart breaking and heart warming  story, two teenagers find love at the wrong time and have a long rocky road to find happiness.

Reena has been in love with Sawyer for as long as she can remember. They have know each other forever but Sawyer has never really noticed Reena. Instead he starts going out with her best friend, Allie. Reena is a quiet girl who works hard at school and plans to get to university. Sawyer is the opposite, a rebel who breaks rules and has problems. They do eventually get together but it happens the night Allie is killed in a car crash.

Their path together is not easy and ends with Sawyer leaving with no word with Reena expecting his child. The story begins years later, Sawyer is back in town. Reena now has a daughter to care for but it seems Sawyer wants to be back in her life. The story moves backwards and forwards between the future and the past as we watch their relationship unfolding.

I started How to love and found I was not able to put it down. I found myself getting caught up in characters lives and wanting to know what happens next. The characters are not perfect, they make mistakes and this makes the whole story more realistic. I really liked the way the book goes back to the past and interweaves it with the present day, it is like putting together a jigsaw and you can see why things are the way they are. It describes a tale of real love, two people who have gone though hardship in order to get together. The path is rocky and the ending is the way it should be. This is an interesting and compelling read, definitely worth picking up.
