I have lots of old videos lying around my house but I no longer have the video recorder attached to the television. With the advent of DVD, DVD recorders and boxes where you can record television directly to the hard drive we never got round to watching our videos. There are a lot that I do not want to throw away as they contain precious family memories or films that are never shown any more. I have tried to convert them to DVD before using a TV card in the computer, but it is fiddly and difficult to capture the signal from the video. When Honestech asked me if I would like to review Honestech VHS to DVD 7.0 Deluxe I was glad to give it a try.
The box contains the vidbox, which is a tv capture device that attaches to the USB port of your computer. The relevant leads are all supplied as well, you get a USB cable and a RCA AV Cable. The software comes on a CD and a quick start guide will get you started quickly. You will need a video player to attach the vidbox to.
Set up was very simple, I attached the vidbox to the video recorder by means of the RCA cable. My video actually has a scart plug on the back but an RCA to scart converter is also in the box so this was not a problem. The USB cable is then used to attach the vidbox to the computer.
Once the software is installed you are ready to capture video. The software is really easy to use, you can choose from easy or advance mode. Easy mode lets you burn the video directly to DVD with no messing about, you just need to choose the length of the video. Advanced mode lets you add titles and menus to the DVD. Once you have the video in the right place all you need to do is start it playing and press record. Once the video has finished the DVD is recorded for you.
I chose to do the video of our honeymoon and found the whole process simple and easy. The DVD burnt with no issues and when I played it back afterwards the the picture quality was good. It does take time for the video to play though, but this is the same with any sort of video capture. With the Honestech VHS to DVD solution you know that it will end at the time you set and you will come back and find the DVD ready. I found this a great solution for saving my videos and will be running a few more though soon. The product can also be used with camcorders so it is ideal for converting family videos.
The Honestech VHS to DVD converter is RRP £52.99. You can find more information on the Honestech website.
Disclosure: I was sent the Honestech VHS to DVD converter in return for an honest review.
