Easter is early this year, it is just around the corner. My son breaks up from school next week and I am hoping we will get some sunny days to get out and explore. I like the Easter holiday, the days are starting to get lighter and the weather generally gets nicer. We usually have a special dinner on Easter Sunday and it is nice to sit down and eat together without having to rush.
When my son was younger the Easter bunny used to visit overnight and leave eggs hidden round the house for him to find. He always got so excited rushing around trying to find them. Now he is older he just gets a big egg. I suspect if eggs were hidden round the house the dog would sniff them out. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs so I am always careful not to leave it lying around.
Have you ever wondered why have chocolate eggs at Easter? An even bigger mystery is why does the Easter bunny deliver them? I did some investigating to see if I could find out. It turns out that the Easter bunny was mentioned in an Anglo-Saxon legend. The Saxon goddess Eostre found a wounded bird and took sympathy on it. She turned it into a hare to enable it to survive the winter. The hare discovered it was able to lay eggs so it decorated these each Spring and left them as an offering for the goddess.
Easter is a Christian festival to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. In the days leading up to Easter, the church did not allow the eating of eggs. Any eggs that were laid during these week were saved, hard boiled and decorated. These were given to children as gifts. In some parts of England these eggs were rolled downhill on Easter Monday, the winner being the one that rolls the furthest. The Victorians adapted the tradition of decorating boiled eggs by making satin covered cardboard eggs which contained gifts. Chocolate eggs started appearing in the 19th Century in France and Germany. These were originally solid but as chocolate making techniques improved they became hollow. The tradition caught on and now a chocolate egg is very much a part of Easter.

Hotel Chocolat really is chocolate for a special occasion. It costs more but it is worth the price. Just biting into it you can really taste the quality. The egg is nice and thick and is consistent all the way though. The pralines are melt in your mouth bites of gorgeousness. The chocolate is almost too nice to share but I did let my husband and son try some. They were happy to try and loved it as well.
