New Covent Garden Baked Potato Soup

When New Covent Garden Soup got in touch to tell me about their latest soup of the month for March I knew I just had to try it. The soup is Baked Potato with Cheese and Beans which is definitely a flavour I would never have thought of making.
photo CoventGardenSoup_zps801fcab8.jpgIt sounded perfect for this cold weather we have been having recently. Baked Potatoes are comfort food and when topped with beans and cheese make  a perfect lunch on a cold day. Could a soup really capture this comforting warmth?

I warmed the soup up in a pan, it took less than five minutes until it was steaming, and poured it into a bowl.

photo ConventGardenSoup2_zpsbb49c703.jpgThe soup has a creamy colour, you can see the little flecks of tomato which are the beans. As for taste it was really lovely, you could taste the fluffy potato most strongly with an after taste of cheese and a very slight hint of beans. It is a lovely warming soup and would be perfect for a lunch or just before dinner on a cold day. It is definitely a flavour I would never have thought of but I was pleased with how well actually works.

If you want to try New Covent Garden Baked Potato with Cheese and Beans soup you will have to hurry. It is available in March at Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Asda, Morrisons and Co-Op RRP £2.20

Disclosure: I was sent some New Convent Garden soup to try in order to carry out an honest review. I was not told what to write and my opinions are my own.

New Covent Garden Soup – British Inspired Recipes

New Covent Garden Soup has launched a new range of soups that use British Inspired recipes to help to celebrate all the great events taking place in Britain over the summer. We have had the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and now the Olympics is about to start. I was sent some vouchers to try these new soups and let you know what I thought. I had a bit of trouble tracking them down but eventually cornered the New Convent Garden soup  in Sainsburys and brought them home to try.

The New Covent Garden soups British Inspired range includes Beetroot & Horseradish, Vintage Cheddar & Piccalilli, Garden Pea, Rocket & Lovage and Parsnip, Apple & Elderflower. They can be eaten hot or cold, so they are perfect for the variable British summer weather. You can have them hot on a cold day or cold on a hot day or vice versa if you prefer! You can’t miss them in the supermarkets, they are in the chiller aisle and have Great British Recipes emblazoned on the top of the carton.

Vintage Cheddar and Piccalilli

Convent Garden SoupPiccalilli is one of those odd things that everyone has heard of but no one is quite sure what it is. Bright yellow in colour, it is a mix of vegetables with seasoning of mustard and turmeric. It is used as a pickle like accompaniment to food. This soup was inspired by a traditional pub classic and is a blend of Vintage Cheddar cheese and chopped vegetables with a hint of mustard heat.

Covent Garden SoupThe Vintage Cheddar and Piccalilli soup is a lovely yellow colour with generous helpings of vegetables. I was wondering what cheese soup would taste like but it is gorgeous. It tastes more like a vegetable soup with hints of cheese and mustard in the background. The family really enjoyed this soup

Beetroot and Horseradish

Covent Garden SoupI love the spicy tastes of horseradish, I put it on lots of different sandwiches. I really like the idea of a beetroot and horseradish soup. Beetroot has an earthy warming taste and I think the horseradish will really spice it up and make it more interesting. I shall be looking out for this one.

Garden Pea, Rocket & Lovage

Covent Garden SoupI love pea soup, it is a very British warming soup. There is nothing nicer than fresh peas picked from the pod on a summer day. Rocket is a lovely peppery lettuce like plant but I was not sure about lovage. It is a herb that was grown in English gardens for hundreds of years for its healing qualities so this soup is really combining very British ingredients. Add a touch of Vintage Cheddar to finish it off and the soup sounds lovely.

Parsnip, Apple and Elderflower

Covent Garden SoupI have made parsnip soup myself and to be honest it was a bit bland. I was wondering what I could spice it up with. It seems like Covent Garden soup have the answer with their mix of parsnip, apple and elderflower. It contains honey roasted parsnips, mixed with tangy Bramley apples and delicately softened with floral elderflower hints. Finished with sour cream and nutmeg, it does not sound at all bland.

The good thing about New Covent Garden Soups is that they contain no additives or preservatives, flavourings, colourings or modified starch of any kind. You can find New Covent Garden Soups in most supermarkets, I found the British Inspired range a bit harder to find though.

Ainsley Harriott Pasta Bake Review

New Covent Garden Soup launches Peoples Soup.

In January New Convent Garden Soup Co. is launching its first ever Soup of the Month, which has been created by you! In the summer 2011  they launched the Soup of the Month competition where soup fans were asked to submit their favourite soup recipe to the New Covent Garden website. The public were then asked to vote which one they thought was the nicest and then expert chefs made a shortlist.  From the shortlist a winner was picked.

The Chinese New Year theme was won by Michael Lamont, well done to him. The soup was Chicken and Creamed Corn and now it is available on the shelves to buy. How amazing is that? The recipe was inspired by a soup his Dad used to cook for him using a method the Chinese term ‘egg-drop ‘soup, beaten eggs are gently dropped into the soup while it is cooking to give it a unique taste. The soup is a mix of tasty chicken, sweetcorn and spring onion and is ideal for the cold weather. It will warm you up while imparting its unique oriental flavours to celebrate Chinese New Year.

From now on, every New Covent Garden Soup of the Month will be created by soup fans of the nation. Each month a new theme will be unveiled which will inspire people to get creative in the kitchen. Currently the theme is ‘Shape up with Soup’ which is ideal for January.  If you fancy seeing your soup recipe on the shelves then all you need to do is to submit your recipe to the New Covent Garden Website at www.newcoventgarden.com

If you want to try the Michael’s Chicken & Creamed Corn Soup it is currently available in all major supermarkets RRP £2.20
