Have you ever wanted to own an estate in Burgundy? The Castles of Burgundy board game from Ravensburger allows you to do just that. It is a strategy game which is set in the Loire Valley in Medieval Times and the aim of the game is to build the most prosperous estate by farming your land, trading, carrying out research and trading. The game is aimed at players aged 12 and above and can be played by two to four people.
This is not a game that can be played quickly and it is one that will take a while to learn. It is a game that requires thought and you need to be able to adapt your plans as the game play changes. Castles of Burgundy is an absorbing game.
The aim of the game is to get the most Victory points and these are earned over the 5 years of the game, each year being in five phases. Each player has a board that represents their estate. It is made up of hexagons formed into a large hexagon. At the start of the game it is empty and as the game progresses you need to build it up. There is room for villages, mines, pastures as spaces to store your money and goods. You gain points by filling your board and if you complete all the regions of the same colour before someone else you will gain more points.
The tiles that you need to fill up your estate are placed on a central board. This is split into six groups and at the start of each phase more tiles are added. To get the tiles you need to roll your dice and pick up a tile from a space marked with that number. When you roll the dice you can either pick up a tile from the central board or place a tile of the same number onto your estate.
The tiles are different types for example grey tiles are mines which help you to gain money, yellows can be used to gain bonuses, green are farm animals and blues are rivers. Dark green tiles are castles. You gain different points depending how these are arranged on your board and two of the same next to each other gains more points.
Castles of Burgundy is an absorbing game which is hard to master. You need to be able to think ahead and plan your strategy whilst dealing with the luck of the dice rolls. Every time you play it you will find you are learning something new. We enjoyed playing this game and it is one we will enjoy for some time to come.
