I was recently sent some McCain Home Chips which I reviewed here but I wanted to try using them in a more creative way than just cooking them. I have been wanting to add more fish to my diet and recently made a fish stew which was well received by the family. This time I decided to try making a fish and chip pie. I would use the frozen chips as the topping instead of pastry or potato.
It might seem odd but I have never made a fish pie from scratch before although I have tried ready made ones. I didn’t think it could be that hard so I gave it a try.
The finished result actually turned out well and I was very pleased. Definitely one I shall be trying again.
This is the recipe I tried:
Ingredients
- 700g (1½ lb) mixed white fish and prawns
- pinch salt
- milk or water to cover fish
- 50g (2oz) butter
- 100g (40oz) mushrooms
- 90 ml (6 level tbsp) plain flour
- 300 ml (½ pint) milk
- salt and pepper
- 2 hard boiled eggs, shelled and chopped
- Frozen chips
Method
- 1.Hard boil the eggs and chop into bits after shelling them.
- Put the white fish in a pan with a pinch of salt and enough water or milk to just cover it. Cover the pan with a lid. Bring to the boil then remove from the heat and leave for five minutes.
- Remove the fish from the pan with a slotted spoon. Flake the fish and remove any bones then add to a casserole dish. Add the eggs and prawns.
- Keep ½ pint of the liquid the fish was cooked in.
- Melt the butter in a pan and sauté the mushrooms. Add them to the casserole dish.

- Add the flour to the melted butter in the pan then gradually add the reserved fish liquid and ½ pint of milk. Bring to the boil stirring all the time until it thickens.
- Add the sauce to the casserole dish with everything else.

- Layer the frozen chops on top of the fish in the casserole dish until covered.

- Bake in a pre-heated oven at 200C, 400F Gas 6 for 30 minutes until the chips are browned.
I served the Fish and Chip Pie with peas and onion rings and it was very tasty. Definitely worth a try.
