Lasagne is a dish I love but I do not tend to make it as often as I should. This is for two reasons. The first reason is that lasagne sheets are square and the only casserole dishes I have are round. I would love a big ceramic dish for serving lasagne in. You know the sort of dish, a bit earthenware one that looks lovely on the table. The second reason is because I am normally in a bit of a hurry and end up doing Spaghetti Bolognese instead.
A while ago I was sent these Ragu Red and White Lasagne Sauces to try but had not quite got around to trying them. This weekend I decided to give them a go and see how well they worked.
Ragu Red Lasagne Sauce is described as a good tomato sauce base and the Ragu White Lasagne Sauce is a basic white sauce. I usually use cheese sauce when I make Lasagne so I was interested to see how well white sauce would work. Maybe I have been making it wrong for years.
Lasagne is quite easy to make, I started by browning some mince, onions and mushrooms in a pan and then I added the Ragu Red Lasagne Sauce. It had a lovely red colour and it smelt very strongly of tomatoes while it was cooking. I let it simmer for about ten minutes until the mince cooked.
Once it was cooked though I took the mince and layered it at the bottom of my cassrole dish. I then placed lasagne sheets on the top, breaking them up so they would fit in my dish. The layer of lasagne was then covered with a layer of Ragu white sauce.
I did another couple of layers of mince, lasagne and white sauce and finally sprinkled the whole lot with some cheese. I then placed the dish in the oven which I had preheated and left it to cook for about 30 minutes until the cheese was bubbling. It looked and smelt tasty.
I was very pleased with the final result, the lasagne sheets were nice and soft and the sauce was very tasty. You could really taste the tomatoes coming though. I was pleased with the way that the white sauce worked in the dish as well and would definitely use this again. My son also loved it and ate it all. The dog did try to get some as well but on this occasion he was unlucky as the plates were all empty.
I had a look at some lasagne recipes and found that it is meant to be made with white sauce rather than cheese sauce which actually was a surprise to me. Cheese sauce does work really well though and you could easily add a little bit of cheese on each layer if you wanted more of a cheesy taste.
You can find Ragu sauces in most supermarkets and there is more information on their products on their website: http://www.ragu.co.uk/
