The Joys of Swimming

I can not remember a time when I was not able to swim. I think I was born a water baby. My earliest memory involving swimming is at a beach when I was about three or four. I was in a yellow plastic dingy with my brothers and my mum was swimming in front, wearing a sun hat and sunglasses and pulling the boat along. This obviously made a great impression on me.

Swimming was always a part of my childhood. There is something relaxing about diving into a pool and swimming a couple of lengths. You feel as if you are in a world of your own as your arms slice though the water and your legs kick up the distance. The world sounds different in a pool, voices sound muffled and there is a background ring of happy laughter intermixed with splashing. It indulges escapism.

I remember going swimming every week with my brothers. We did swimming classes and each week was a different challenge. We ended up with an array of badges sewn onto our swimming towels, 100m, 200m all the way up to bronze medallion in lifesaving. Each hard earned and treasured. Every week we did something new, from swimming lengths in pyjamas to learning to dive. There was a separate diving pool with three boards, one was really high. We picked up the courage to jump from the second board but never quite managed the third. When you are standing there is looks so high, even though you know that its not that bad having seen it from below.

After each class we used to go to the snack bar which overlooked the pool and have a treat, a packet of mixed nuts and a drink or a sausage roll. Somehow the simplest snack tastes much nicer after exercise. We used to love watching the other people swim below us, wondering if people had sat there and watched use while we were in the pool.

Our visit to America was a real eye opener. The weather was gorgeous and each motel we stayed in had its own pool. The first thing we used to do was rush out with our towels and try each pool. There is something magical about swimming in the open air in the warmth with the sun beating down on you. In one pool there was a shallow pond right next to it on the other side of the fence. One day there was a great commotion and it turned out that a snapping turtle had been caught. We watched enthralled as the man who caught it demonstrated how it snapped when confronted and had nightmares later about it snapping our toes while swimming.

We also experienced swimming in a lake for the first time while we were here. A lake is a whole different experience to a swimming pool. The water has a different coloured tint and the bottom is soft and muddy not stone. There are reeds and pond weed and there may even be fish. You duck dive into the murky depths not knowing what might be lurking beneath, it is an adventure in itself. You never know how deep the bottom is and have to be careful not to go too far in case you are out of your depth. It is an adventure, you can pretend you are the first to swim in the lake while listening to the birds sing overhead and the wind blowing though the trees.

Now I am a mum myself I want my son to know the joys of swimming for himself. I took him to the pool when he was a baby. You learn how it feels to learn to swim as you watch them with their armbands on struggling to keep afloat in the shallow end. You want to swim yourself but are bound to keep them safe and pull them next to you teaching them the joy of water. As he got more confident, with weekly lessons he would swim after me trying to catch me still staying in the shallow end. Now he will follow me up to the deep end, trying to pick up keys from the bottom and enjoying the swim. He has his own array of swimming badges switched onto his towel and I am so glad he is confident in the water.

Tanatomicals Tanning Range Review

The weather has been horrible recently, rain, rain and more rain. Why not add a little sunshine into your life with the Tanatomicals tanning range? These are a range of fake tans that you will find in Superdrug stores which are quick and easy to apply and offer natural results. Each of the products is ph balanced with moisturisers including Aloe Vera which help create a streak free finish. They are all scented with a fresh tropical pina colada fragrance which makes them smell nice while you apply them.

There are four products in the Tanatomicals range which have fun names, well they always make me smile. They are all instant tans, you just need to pick the product that will best suit your needs. The products in the range are:

  • Get a tan without looking like your gran body and face instant tan – this one makes you look tanned instantly on application and washes off when you no longer require it.
  • Because only bacon should be streaky natural looking tanning cream – a cream that develops gradually over a few hours creating a Mediterranean glow.
  • Me Tarzan, you Jane, we cheaters instant spray tan
  • The Holy Grail for the deathly pale self tan mousse – a light and easy to apply self tan mousse.

I was sent a couple of the products to try out and see what I thought. I chose to try the me Tarzan, you Jane, we cheaters and the Holy Grail for the deathly pale products.Tanatomicals Tanning RangeThe products come in nice bright orange boxes and you can clearly see which product is which as the writing makes it clear.

The me Tarzan you Jane me Cheaters spray tan was really easy to apply. It uses 360 degree technology which makes it easy to apply at any angle. I had no problem applying it to the back of my legs but I think I would struggle trying to do my back, simply because of the way my arms bend. I noticed that I had not left much mess on the bath and shower tiles after application.

While spraying it you notice the smell but it is a nice fresh smell, not at all unpleasant. I was a bit worried at first as the colour is very dark on application and I was really worried how it would turn out. After it dries however it is a lovely golden colour.  I only applied the tan to one of my legs so I could do a comparison, this is the difference.

TanatomicalsAs you can see it is a lovely golden glow. I think I need to practice applying a spray tan a little more to get a perfect finish but it is a lovely product.

Tanatomicals

I also tried the Holy Grail for the deathly pale tanning mousse. I have tried this product before and it is really easy to apply and is a lovely light colour on the skin. It gives a lovely even tan and is coloured so you can see where you have applied it and which bits you have missed.

The products are all RRP £6.99 and are available from Superdrug stores nationwide and also www.asos.com.For a lovely golden glow at an affordable price look no further.

Tanatomicals also have a Facebookpage and are on Twitter. It is worth following them on here as they provide information about new product launches and also run competitions and special offers.

A Visit to the Great North Museum

One thing I love about living in Newcastle is that there is plenty to see and do in the area.  On a wet miserable day it is great to be able to go and visit a museum, it gets you out of the house and it is educational for the kids. Recently we paid another visit to the Great North Museum or the Hancock Museum which is right in the centre of town.

Great North MuseumThe Great North Museum is a Natural History Museum which is housed in an imposing 19th Century Building. To get to it you have to walk up a staircase which gives it an sense of grandeur. Entry into the museum is free, but there are some parts you need pay for like the planetarium. The museum is on two floors. When you first walk in you are confronted by an amazing wall of animals. There is everything from elephants, to giant turtles to goats and overhead there is a flock of seagulls and other birds.

Great North MuseumYou can spend a while looking at all the amazing animals on display and when you walk around the corner you are faced with a shark. It is fascinating to see the range of animals we have in this world.

Leaving the animals behind we find ourselves in a section devoted to the different ages of man. There are sections on the stone age, iron age, bronze age and the time of the Romans all with exhibits showing the type of pottery and weaponry used then.

Great North Museum.A lot of the exhibits are interactive and my son spent a long time designing a Saxon shield on a computer screen. When it was finished it was displayed on the wall in full colour which he loved. He also managed to find himself a friend from the distant past!

Great North MuseumI really liked the section on Roman history. There is a scale model of Hadrians Wall and it really makes you realise what an effort the Romans put into building it. I took a picture from the second floor which gives an idea of how large the model is.

Great North MuseumEven this does not show the full length of the wall. The map shows the key points along the wall with the different forts marked clearly. This exhibit is surrounded by information on what it was like to be alive in the time of the Romans and it really brings the period to life.

Leaving the Romans we walk into the time of the dinosaurs.

Great North MuseumAlong with the models and fossils which show you how the dinosaurs looked there are screens which show short films showing the dinosaurs as they would have been when they were alive. There are also live animals, lizards, snakes and shrimps which all add to the experience. All children are fascinated with dinosaurs so we spent a little while in this section.

Upstairs there is more natural history, you get to pass the wall of animals again and view them from the top of the stairs. There are then more displays with smaller animals and interactive exhibits. Passing this you go into a section on the Egyptians with a mummy.

Great North MuseumThere are a lot of other displays about Egyptian life, including an amazing interactive floor which shows the journey to death. At one point there were snakes on the floor which was a bit of a shock. It was funny watching the toddlers interact with this exhibit, one of them thought the snakes were real.

The reason we actually visited the museum this particular week was to take part in the Great North Build. This was an interactive Lego exhibition that was on for two weeks which gave visitors an opportunity to shape their ideal town. We were given the chance to create a building and they were added to the Lego town.

Great North MuseumIt was a great idea for an exhibit and we enjoyed building our model. Looking at the town itself was fascinating, see the buildings others had created. The only downside was that there was a bit of a wait to get tickets to go in.

If you are in Newcastle and looking for somewhere to spend a few hours the Great North Museum is definitely worth a visit. You can happily spend a while in here looking at the exhibits and it is is aimed at all ages.
